We understand that the scale may seem like your nemesis when you first begin your battle against obesity, but there are many reasons that you should view it as one of the most useful weapons in your arsenal. Before you donate your scale or toss it out in frustration, don’t let the ghost of your past haunt you. By being compliant with the KPP, your bathroom scale will become a friend. You will “love your bathroom scale” when you see an average weight loss of ½ to 3 pounds every day. The best part of your day will be when you wake up and watch your scale numbers go down.
- It is part of a healthy lifestyle. Just like brushing your teeth and taking your supplements each day, weighing yourself should become part of your daily ritual. In the fight against fat, ignorance is not bliss; you must stay in touch with your body each day to make sure you are staying on track with your goals.
- It is a great way to touch base with your body. If you have been eating well but you notice a gain, your body may be trying to tell you something. The scale allows you to know what is normal for your body so you can take action when things are not so normal.
- It really works! A 2016 study conducted by researchers at Duke and Cornell Universities found that those who weighed themselves daily over a 12-week period either lost or maintained weight, while those who did not gained an average of five pounds. A similar study of 92 overweight adults found that those who weighed daily and shared their results with a coach or accountability partner also lost and maintained weight. Additionally, none of the daily weighers reported feeling depressed or defeated by their results.
- It is a powerful motivator. Seeing those numbers drop motivates you to keep up the good work. Just when you’re ready to give in to that pasta salad or margarita, you’ll remember how good it felt early that morning when you weighed yourself and experienced another loss.
