The Dangers of Sugar
Too much sugar is toxic, yet studies have shown that we typically consume our body weight in added sugar every year. Sugar-related illnesses are growing rapidly. Sugar is killing us. We are literally sweetening ourselves to death but do little to stop it. Why?
For the answer to that, we need to look at what sugar does.
Your brain gets a rush from sugar. It causes a surge of dopamine, the neurotransmitter that motivates and rewards you in your brain centers. It’s been called the “feel-good hormone,” but repeated spikes can dull the effect, which means you need more and more added sugar to get the same effect over time. One recent study suggested that extra-sugary treats could be as addictive as morphine or cocaine. In fact, for some, that addiction can cause the same withdrawal symptoms that might be found in trying to get off street drugs.
Why Is Added Sugar Bad?
The diet industry has waged a war on fat, but the fact is, sugar is more dangerous. Natural sugars can be beneficial; the problem comes from all the added sugar we consume. Here are a few ways it can harm your health:
- Prematurely Ages You — Sugar attaches to proteins, causing the skin to lose elasticity and sag, making you look years older.
- Increases Dangerous Risks — The risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, dementia, certain cancers, fatty liver disease, high blood pressure, and Alzheimer’s are all significantly higher with higher amounts of added sugar. And the increased risk for disease is compounded by the fact that sugar can interfere with your immune system.
- Affects Oral Health — Dental treatment costs are around $172 billion globally, with over one-fourth of that attributed to the consumption of added sugars.
- Unstable Blood Sugar Levels — Glucose levels spike and plummet from the varying amounts of sugar in the system, which can cause irritation, mood swings, fatigue, and headaches. It also contributes to more cravings, creating an unhealthy cycle.
